Melina began her career as a model. She won a Miss California beauty contest and also modeled athletic wear for Nike. She decided to become a professional wrestler after talking to Empire Wrestling Federation (EWF) superstar Mike Henderson in 2000. Perez started training at Jesse Hernandez's School of Hard Knocks in San Bernardino, California and made her professional debut in April 2002. Many EWF officials stated that she had the most natural ability of any woman who came through their school. In late 2002 Perez auditioned for World Wrestling Entertainment's reality show Tough Enough III, making it through to the final twenty-one before being eliminated from the competition in the final cut of the first episode. After she was eliminated from the contest, trainer Al Snow pulled Perez aside and encouraged her to keep trying to pursue her dream as a wrestler.

Injury Update

Despite being injured on Tuesday night, Melina still traveled to last night’s WWE Supershow house show in Syracuse, New York. She was seen backstage on crutches.
Melina is expected to undergo an MRI to fully assess her injury. Obviously she did not work the show last night.
WWE Women’s champion Melina slipped during a tag match tonight during the WWE Raw house show in Manchester, New Hampshire and immediately began grabbing her knee. The match was ended with Melina being immediately pinned and helped out of the ring.
We are waiting on confirmation regarding the injury, which I believe to be legitimate as she wasn’t involved in anything physical at the time she went down – and in fact, hadn’t even gotten involved in the match at that point.
Professional baseball player Johnny Damon may be a free agent now, but the former New York Yankee proved that he still knows how to bring a crowd to their feet. To the delight of the Florida faithful, Damon informed them that not only would Santa be popping in to grant one lucky Superstar a wish, the first bout of the evening would be a Six-Diva Santa’s Little Helper Tag Team Match featuring Divas Champion Melina, Kelly Kelly & Gail Kim against Maryse, Alicia Fox & Jillian.
With Maryse and Alicia Fox both pining for the Golden Butterfly, the pair may have focused too much of their attention on Divas Champion Melina. As a result, Kelly Kelly managed to pin the equally beautiful Maryse for the victory. And I must add that the reason Team Melina won is because Melina did a dropkick to Maryse which allowed Kelly to pick up the win.
What would an awards show be without a bevy of beauties in gorgeous gowns? To remedy a lack of lovelies, a bevy of Divas competed in a 7-on-7 Divas Tag Match, including Mickie James, Divas Champion Melina, Gail Kim, Kelly Kelly, Brie and Nikki Bella & Maria against Women’s Champion Michelle McCool, Layla, Beth Phoenix, Natalya, Maryse, Alicia Fox & Rosa Mendes. When the sequins settled, it was Mickie who won the match for her team by pinning Rosa.
Afterward, the Diva of the Year Slammy Award was bestowed upon the sexy, smart and powerful woman who won the most votes exclusively on WWE.com. Your 2009 Slammy Award-winning Diva of the Year? None other than Maria!
